Huh? Well, to my surprise, cleansing my face with oil has been pretty darn successful. You may wonder, what made me entertain this idea? Recently, I have been dissecting self-care products because what enters our bodies through our skin can have a huge impact on our health. Our skin is super porous and so it absorbs things very quickly into our bloodstream!

There are so many scary ingredients in the self-care products, including facial cleansers, which I once used on a daily basis. I actually just cleaned out a closet next to my bathroom and I found a lot of products that I used to put on my body all the time…sunscreens, anti-bacterial creams, shampoos, lotions, makeup, etc – all of which have dangerous chemical ingredients. Those products said good-bye to my body and hello to the trash can. Even the more “natural” self-care products leave me questioning not only some of the ingredients, but the necessity of using them in general. A good example is lotion. I previously used the typical lotion brands – Suave, Curel and St Ives (My go-to for shampoo was Pantene, White Rain or Clairol). For my lotions, I transitioned to a lotion labeled natural. Then, for the past year, I’ve been using coconut oil and my skin has never been so soft. I used to have “sandpaper dry” hands almost year-round, even with the constant application of those lotions. With pure coconut oil, no more dry skin! Plus, coconut oil has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal benefits to boot!

So, back to the subject of oil for my face. One night, I was perusing several blogs/websites online referencing homemade self-care products. I came across information on the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM). This article says it well. Basically, by washing our face with a soapy cleanser, we are stripping our skin’s natural oils, forcing our face to produce MORE oil! So in order to get our skin back in balance, we need to supply it with good oils – the basic combination is castor oil and extra virgin olive oil. When I thought about this, my previous routine of washing my face with soaps (which left my skin dry) followed by using a moisturizer, started to sound like a silly and unnecessary cycle. So I changed to OCM. Trust me – my skin is so much smoother and moisturized than it ever has been! I no longer use any moisturizer on my face except for a smidge of coconut oil. Keep in mind that your skin may go through a “detoxing” phase when you first switch over to OCM. Be patient and keep going. Eventually your skin’s oils will rebalance. (Just a side note to the ladies – coconut oil on a cotton ball is a great eye-makeup remover).

In addition to the OCM, there are many other self-care routines that we can easily change in order to reduce the toxic load from harmful self-care product ingredients. Here are my top three recommendations to get started:

  • Change your deodorant to one that does not contain aluminum! Read this.
  • Use coconut oil on your skin instead of lotion.
  • Try the OCM!

Once you are comfortable with those transitions, build on it with more non-toxic care for you and your body!
